A tool designed for fitting and removing external retaining rings (circlips) in mechanisms and equipment. The straight jaws allow work with circlips fitted on shafts and journals.
Features of external circlip pliers
Machined jaw tips

Difference between external and internal pliers
External (expanding) pliers are used for circlips fitted on shafts – when the handles are squeezed, the tips move apart, expanding the circlip. Internal (closing) pliers work the opposite way – the tips move towards each other, which allows the circlip to be compressed inside a bore or sleeve. Before buying, check whether the circlip has its holes on the outside or the inside.
Use and maintenance
Before starting work, check the condition of the tips – worn or damaged points may slip out of the circlip holes. During fitting, expand the circlip just enough for it to slide freely into the groove, but without over-stretching, which can cause permanent deformation.
After finishing work, clean off any dirt and protect the pliers with a thin layer of maintenance oil, particularly around the pivot joint. Do not use the pliers as a lever or for tasks beyond their intended purpose – this can knock the spring mechanism out of adjustment or bend the jaws.
Checking compatibility with the circlip
The circlip diameter and the spacing of its fitting holes must match the capabilities of the pliers. For circlips with non-standard dimensions or very small diameters, it may be necessary to use pliers of a different length or with interchangeable tips. It is always worth checking the component's technical documentation before starting dismantling work.
