Features of the YATO engineer's square

Accuracy class II to DIN 875/2

The DIN 875/2 standard specifies the permissible tolerances for a right angle. Class II is a workshop tolerance — sufficient for most metalworking, joinery and assembly work, while offering a favourable ratio of price to measuring accuracy.

C45 carbon steel — durable construction

C45 structural steel contains around 0.45% carbon, which provides optimum mechanical strength and resistance to deformation. This material does not deform easily under stress, which translates into long-term stability of the right angle.

Ground and polished surface

Grinding removes surface irregularities and provides a smooth working surface. Polishing further reduces friction during marking out and makes it easier to clean dirt and swarf from the tool.

Flat construction — stability on the surface

The flat profile of the square ensures reliable contact with the workbench or the workpiece. This eliminates the risk of tilting during measurement, which improves the repeatability of results.

Applications of the engineer's square

  • Checking right angles in welded and bolted structures
  • Marking out perpendicular lines on sheet metal, steel sections and timber
  • Setting up machine tool components — checking the angle of a tool holder against a guide
  • Fitting joinery — checking angles in window and door frames
  • Construction work — verifying the squareness of walls and columns
  • Production quality control — measuring angles on finished parts
  • Setting cutting and grinding tools at 90°
  • Checking the squareness of the workpiece before cutting

How to check the accuracy of an engineer's square

Place both arms against a reference plate or a perfectly flat surface. Then rotate the square by 180° and place it down again. If the edges align with no visible gaps, the tool still holds a true right angle. It is worth checking periodically, especially after a drop or intensive use.

Maintenance and storage

After each use, remove swarf and dirt with a soft cloth. The working surface can be protected with a thin layer of protective oil, which prevents corrosion in damp conditions. Store the square in a dry place, lying flat or hanging, avoiding contact with other metal tools that could damage the measuring edges.

Never use the square as a lever, a spacer or a hammer — any mechanical damage to the edges or deformation of the arms will result in a loss of measuring accuracy.
