Features of external circlips
External fitting on shafts
External circlips are fitted into grooves machined on the outside surface of shafts. They prevent components from sliding along the shaft axis, acting as mechanical retainers. They are used in assemblies where access to the shaft is easier than access to a bore.
18 sizes in the set
The set covers a wide range of diameters, which removes the need to buy individual circlips. It allows shafts of various diameters to be handled at a single workplace. Useful in workshops where a wide variety of mechanisms are repaired.
Organiser for easy sorting

How to select the correct circlip size
The circlip size is selected on the basis of the shaft diameter at the fitting point. Measure the outside diameter of the shaft and check the groove dimensions (width and depth). The circlip must match the groove in accordance with DIN 471 or equivalent standards. A circlip that is too small will not fit correctly; one that is too large will not provide the required retention.
Fitting and removing circlips
Fitting external circlips requires the use of purpose-made external circlip pliers. The tool spreads the circlip, allowing it to be slid onto the shaft and seated in the groove. Once the pliers are released, the circlip springs back to its original shape and locks into the groove.
For removal, use circlip pliers with outward-facing tips. Expanding the circlip allows it to be slid off the shaft. Carry out the operation carefully so as not to deform the circlip permanently and to avoid it springing off during expansion.
Maintenance and storage
Circlips should be stored in a dry place, protected from moisture. The organiser should be kept closed to prevent contamination of the components. Before fitting, clean the circlip and the groove of any contamination and check the condition of the surface. Damaged or corroded circlips should be replaced, as they lose their elastic properties.
