The KD11248 is a set of two conical firewood splitting drill bits designed for use with an electric drill. The tools are made from carbon steel and are supplied with M14 adaptors that allow them to be mounted on standard angle grinder spindles and in drill adaptors.
Firewood splitting drill bits have a threaded conical shape that, as it rotates, is driven into the wood and separates the fibres along their natural fractures. This method requires neither an axe nor a wedge — the wood splits of its own accord under the pressure of the cone.
The 32 mm bit is suitable for smaller logs and billets, while the 42 mm bit is intended for thicker logs. Matching the bit diameter to the size of the wood reduces the time and effort needed to split it.
The material used gives the cutting edge hardness and resistance to deformation when working under load. Carbon steel is the standard choice for cutting tools where durability in contact with hard material is required.
The M14 thread is the standard used on angle grinders. The four adaptors supplied allow the bits to be mounted in drill chucks with different jaw sizes, which increases compatibility with the equipment you already own.
Firewood splitting drill bits must only be used at a right angle (90°) to the surface of the wood. Working at any other angle may cause the tool to jam in the material, damage the drill or injure the operator. A drill with variable speed control is recommended.

Before first use, check that the adaptor is tightened to the drill with the correct torque — a loose fixing may cause the bit to come out during work. Set the drill to rotate in the direction that matches the thread of the cone — this is usually clockwise rotation (the standard direction of a drill).
After use, clean the bits of resin and wood shavings. White spirit can be used to remove resin. Storing the bits in the supplied case protects the working edges from mechanical damage and corrosion.
The bits are not suitable for use on wet or freshly cut wood with a very high moisture content — the material may grip the cone, making the tool difficult to withdraw.
