Flat Wood Drill Bit 14 x 152 mm YT-3241 YATO

Flat wood drill bit designed for drilling through holes and stopped holes in softwood and hardwood. The flat blade design with a central pilot point provides stable guidance and clean hole edges.

Diameter14 mm
Overall length152 mm
MaterialTool steel
ModelYT-3241

Features of the flat wood bit

Flat blade design

The flat cutting form clears chips quickly and reduces resistance while drilling. The central pilot point stabilises the bit during the initial stage of drilling, preventing the bit from wandering across the surface of the material.

14 mm diameter

A size suitable for drilling holes for standard furniture dowels, installation cables and fasteners. Commonly used in furniture making and finishing work.

152 mm working length

The overall length of the bit allows holes up to approximately 130-140 mm deep to be drilled, which is enough to drill through standard boards and panels up to 40 mm thick with clearance for a complete pass.

Tool steel

A material characterised by suitable hardness and resistance to abrasion. Tool steel retains the sharpness of the cutting edges through repeated use in softwood and hardwood.

Applications of the 14 mm flat wood bit

  • Drilling holes for furniture dowels in chipboard, MDF and plywood
  • Furniture assembly – preparing holes for confirmat screws and cam fittings
  • Routing electrical cables through timber structural components
  • Drilling fixing holes in timber beams and squared timber
  • Carpentry work – drilling holes for tenons and larger-diameter screws
  • Plumbing – pipe runs through stud partition walls and frame members
  • Furniture restoration – drilling holes for new handles and hinges
  • Hobby and model-making work requiring 14 mm holes

Use and maintenance

Preparation

Before drilling begins, mark the centre of the hole with a centre punch or pilot drill bit. Fit the bit in the drill chuck to a depth of at least 20 mm, making sure the grip is secure. The workpiece should be properly secured to prevent it from moving during drilling.

Operating parameters

Flat wood bits run at medium speeds – for a 14 mm diameter, a speed of 1,500-2,500 rpm is recommended, depending on the hardness of the wood. In hardwood, use lower speeds and greater feed pressure. Excessive speed can scorch the edges of the hole and blunt the bit more quickly.

Tool maintenance

After use, clean the bit of chips and wood dust. The cutting edges can be sharpened periodically with a flat file, maintaining the original sharpening angle. Store the bit in a dry place, protected from moisture, which can cause the steel to corrode.

Safety

Safety goggles must be worn while drilling to protect against flying chips. Work gloves protect the hands from possible scratches. Do not touch the bit immediately after use – the steel heats up during drilling and needs time to cool.
