Steel wire construction

How to choose the correct brush size
Before purchase, measure the internal diameter of the chimney or flue. The brush should be slightly larger than the diameter of the flue (by 5-10 mm) so that the wire bristles reach the walls effectively and remove deposits. For flues of variable diameter, choose a size to suit the narrowest section.
Use and maintenance of the flue brush
The brush is fitted to a chimney rod by screwing the M12 thread into a suitable adaptor or directly into the thread of the rod. During cleaning, use a push-and-pull motion, gradually moving the brush along the entire length of the flue. Working from the top of the chimney downwards is recommended, as this allows the removed soot to fall under gravity into the inspection chamber.
After use, clean the brush of any remaining soot with a wire brush and rinse it with water. Periodically check the condition of the steel bristles – excessive bending or damage to the wires reduces cleaning efficiency and may mean the brush needs to be replaced.
How often to clean chimney flues
Under building regulations, chimney flues in residential buildings should be cleaned at least once a year, and where solid fuel boilers are used intensively, as often as every 3 months. Regular cleaning prevents the build-up of soot, which can self-ignite and cause a chimney fire.
