A die designed for cutting and restoring metric M4 external threads with a 0.7 mm pitch. Made from HSS high-speed steel and conforming to DIN 223, it ensures a consistent thread profile when working on steel rods, bolts and studs.
HSS (High Speed Steel) is an alloy characterised by high hardness and resistance to the temperatures generated during cutting. The cutting edges stay sharp over a long service life, which translates into a clean thread profile and a lower risk of tool breakage.
DIN 223 defines the dimensions and tolerances of round dies. Compliance guarantees that the die fits standard hand die stocks intended for dies of the relevant outside diameter, and that the thread produced stays within the required tolerances.
The swarf clearance holes in the die body clear the material removed while cutting the thread. Efficient swarf clearance reduces cutting resistance, limits heating of the tool and reduces the risk of the die binding on the workpiece.
The die can both cut a new thread on a plain rod and restore a damaged or clogged thread on an existing component. The restoration function is useful when repairing bolted joints where replacing the component is not cost-effective.

The M4 x 0.7 mm die is used wherever an M4 external thread needs to be cut or restored. Typical areas of use:
Before cutting an M4 x 0.7 mm thread, the rod should be turned down to, or selected with, a diameter close to the pitch diameter of the thread — for M4 this is approximately 3.5–3.6 mm. Too large a rod diameter increases cutting resistance and may damage the die, while too small a diameter results in a thread with an incomplete profile.
When cutting a thread, the use of a cutting fluid (such as threading oil or threading paste) is recommended, as it reduces friction, limits heating of the tool and improves the surface quality of the thread. The die should be mounted in a die stock intended for DIN 223 dies of the correct outside diameter.
After finishing work, the tool should be cleaned of swarf and grease residue, then stored in a dry place, protecting the cutting edges from contact with other metal tools to prevent them from becoming blunt or chipped.
