Technical characteristics of the HSS 4241 drill bit

HSS 4241 high-speed steel

The 4241 designation refers to the chemical composition of the steel (4% chromium, 2% vanadium, 4% molybdenum, 1% tungsten). This composition delivers a hardness of 63-65 HRC after hardening, which translates into wear resistance and the ability to work at temperatures of up to 600°C without losing cutting properties.

135° split point

The cross-ground 135° point eliminates the need to centre-punch the surface before drilling. This design reduces thrust forces when starting the hole and prevents the bit from slipping, which is particularly important at small diameters.

Ground to the DIN 338 standard

The DIN 338 standard defines the geometry of a parallel shank drill: a 118° point angle, a 25-30° helix angle and h8 diameter tolerances. This guarantees consistent dimensions of the holes produced and allows the bit to be re-sharpened without losing its performance.

35 mm working length

The total length of the drill bit is 35 mm, which at a diameter of 1.0 mm gives a length-to-diameter ratio of 35:1. This ratio provides stability during drilling while still allowing holes up to 25 mm deep to be drilled in a single pass.

Applications of the 1.0 mm HSS drill bit

  • Drilling mounting holes in steel sections and sheet metal up to 3 mm thick
  • Drilling through holes in stainless steel in the food and medical industries
  • Preparing pilot holes before drilling with larger diameters
  • Drilling into metal enclosures of electronic and electrical equipment
  • Precision work in metal modelling and prototyping
  • Drilling into grey and ductile (nodular) cast iron in the production of machine components
  • Drilling holes in steel components in engineering workshops
  • Drilling into high-carbon steel during tool and equipment repairs

Operating parameters and compatibility

Recommended rotational speeds

For structural steel: 2500-3000 rpm. For stainless steel: 1500-2000 rpm. For cast iron: 2000-2500 rpm. Drilling requires the use of a cutting fluid or cutting emulsion, which extends drill bit life and improves hole quality.

Mounting in the chuck

A 1.0 mm drill bit requires a drill chuck with a clamping range from 0.5 mm. Precision keyed chucks or keyless chucks are recommended. Check the radial runout of the drill bit - it should not exceed 0.02 mm.

Maintenance and service life

HSS 4241 drill bits stay sharp for around 200-300 holes in structural steel with correct cooling. Once blunt, they can be re-sharpened using a drill sharpener with a diamond or aluminium oxide wheel of 120-180 grit. When sharpening, maintain a 118° point angle and symmetry of the cutting edges.

Storing drill bits in their original packaging or in compartmented cases protects the cutting edges from damage. Drill bits should be protected from moisture - contact with water without anti-corrosion protection can lead to rust, particularly on the working edges.

Recognising wear

Signs that replacement or sharpening is needed: increased feed pressure when drilling, discolouration of the cutting edges (straw or blue colour), a rough hole surface, increased noise during operation. Drilling with a blunt bit leads to overheating of the material and damage to the workpiece.
