A tool for the mechanical cleaning of the internal surface of copper pipes before soldering. The brush prepares the metal surface by removing the oxide layer and contaminants, which ensures proper solder adhesion.
The 18 mm working diameter matches standard copper pipework used in plumbing and air conditioning installations. The brush operates within a dimensional tolerance that ensures even cleaning of the entire internal circumference without the risk of damaging the pipe wall.
The filaments, made from corrosion-resistant steel, retain their stiffness and abrasive properties throughout their service life. The material leaves no contaminants on the cleaned surface and does not react chemically with copper, which eliminates the risk of joint contamination.
The mechanical action of the filaments removes tarnish and copper oxides formed through contact with air and moisture. Exposing clean metal is a prerequisite for correct solder flow and for forming a leak-tight capillary joint.
The tool is intended for manual cleaning by rotating it inside the pipe. Its ergonomic shape allows the filaments to be pressed against the walls in a controlled manner, so the intensity of the treatment can be matched to the level of surface contamination.

Correct preparation of the internal surface of a copper pipe has a direct effect on the quality of the soldered joint. The oxide layer and greasy contaminants prevent the solder from flowing and reduce the mechanical strength of the joint.
The brush is inserted into the pipe to a depth corresponding to the length of the pipe end or fitting socket to be joined. Three to five full turns are made with light pressure against the walls. After the tool has been removed, loose metal particles should be cleared by blowing out or wiping with a clean cloth. Cleaning is carried out immediately before soldering in order to minimise re-oxidation of the surface.
The effectiveness of mechanical cleaning can be assessed visually – a correctly prepared surface has a uniform, metallic sheen with no discolouration or deposits. Heavily oxidised pipes may require the additional use of cleaning pastes or chemical agents.
The 18 mm brush is intended for pipes with an outside diameter of 18 mm, which corresponds to an inside diameter of approximately 16 mm depending on the wall thickness. The actual dimensions of the pipes in the installation should be verified before purchase. Copper pipe manufacturers use metric or imperial markings – an 18 mm pipe is the equivalent of 5/8 inch in the imperial system.
After use, the brush should be cleaned of copper residue and any remaining flux. The stainless steel bristles can be washed with water and detergent and then dried. Storage in a dry place prevents corrosion of the handle and preserves the elasticity of the filaments.
Worn bristles lose their stiffness and their ability to remove the oxide layer effectively. Signs that the tool needs replacing include visible bending of the filaments, filaments falling out, or reduced cleaning effectiveness requiring the operation to be repeated several times.
