Comparison of the file profiles in the set
Flat taper file
A profile that tapers towards the tip. Used for working sharp corners, narrow slots and grooves of varying width. It allows areas that are out of reach for parallel files to be reached.
Flat parallel file
A profile of constant width along its entire length. Intended for working flat surfaces, straight edges and grooves of constant width. It ensures even material removal.
Three-square file
A triangular profile with three working faces. Used for working internal corners, V-shaped grooves and holes with a triangular cross-section. It allows angles to be shaped precisely.
Round file
A cylindrical profile. Intended for enlarging round holes, working internal curved surfaces and shaping spherical recesses.
Half-round file
A profile with one flat side and one convex side. A versatile file for working both flat and concave surfaces. The convex side is used for enlarging holes and shaping curves.
Knife file
A wedge-shaped profile with a sharp edge. Used for working narrow slots, wedge-shaped grooves, sharp corners and areas requiring precise access with the edge.
Use and maintenance
When working with needle files, a single-direction stroke is recommended – pressure applied on the forward stroke, with a free return stroke without pressure. Used in this way, the files resist rapid blunting of the teeth and their working life is extended.
After finishing work, the files should be cleaned with a wire brush to remove contamination and metal filings. Regular cleaning prevents the teeth from clogging and maintains cutting efficiency. Storing them in a dry place protects against corrosion and mechanical damage.
Avoiding excessive pressure when filing prevents damage to the teeth and breakage of the file. When working hard metals, machine oil is recommended as a coolant and to reduce friction.
