Ratchet mechanism
The ratchet system allows cutting in several stages, reducing the hand force required by around 30-40%. The mechanism holds the blade after each squeeze, allowing you to close it again without the blade slipping back. A useful solution when cutting harder branches close to the maximum diameter.
SK5 steel blade with PTFE coating
SK5 carbon steel contains 0.75-0.85% carbon, giving a hardness of 58-60 HRC and keeping the blade sharp for longer. The PTFE (Teflon) coating reduces friction during cutting and prevents plant sap from sticking, which makes working with damp plants easier and reduces the need for cleaning.
Anvil design
The anvil type means the blade presses the branch against a flat surface (the anvil). This design works well for cutting dry wood and dead growth, producing a clean cut without crushing the tissue. It is less suitable for cutting live, soft growth.
PVC handles
The PVC handles provide a non-slip grip when working in damp conditions. The material absorbs some of the vibration generated during cutting, reducing strain on the wrists during prolonged use. A safety lock prevents accidental opening in storage.

Use and maintenance
Safe working practices
Before you start cutting, check the condition of the blade and that the mechanism is stable. Branches over 19 mm in diameter require tools with greater cutting power. During use, hold the secateurs at right angles to the branch, avoiding twisting, which can damage the ratchet mechanism.
Maintenance after use
After use, wipe plant sap off the blade with a damp cloth. The ratchet mechanism needs occasional lubrication with machine oil at the pivot points. Storing in a dry place with the lock closed protects against corrosion and accidental damage to the blade.
Sharpening the blade
SK5 steel can be sharpened with a diamond file or ceramic whetstone at an angle of 20-25 degrees. Sharpen only the bevelled edge of the blade, without touching the flat side. Regular sharpening every 2-3 seasons maintains cutting efficiency and reduces the load on the ratchet mechanism.
