Manual recoil starter for Honda GX160-type petrol engines and their equivalents. A component used in generators, plate compactors, pumps and other equipment fitted with 160 cm³ four-stroke engines.
The starter fits original Honda GX160 engines as well as equivalents made by various manufacturers. This means it can be used both on equipment with original engines and on units with Chinese-made engines of the same class.
The mounting hole centres are 160 mm — the standard figure for GX160 engines. Before purchase, measure the distance between the hole centres on the engine housing to confirm that it matches this specification.
The starter is fitted with two metal pawls that provide durable engagement with the flywheel. The metal construction of the pawls makes them more resistant to wear than plastic designs, which translates into a longer service life for the mechanism.
An overall diameter of 175 mm allows fitting in standard GX160 engine housings without modification. The starter's dimensions take in both the housing and the rope winding mechanism.

Before purchase, measure the mounting hole centres on the engine housing (the distance between the hole centres should be 160 mm). Also check whether the engine is marked GX160 or has a capacity of 160 cm³. If in doubt, consult the machine's technical documentation or compare the dimensions with your old starter.
Fitting the starter involves undoing the two bolts securing the old mechanism and fitting the new one with the pawls correctly positioned in relation to the flywheel. Once fitted, check that the starter rope runs smoothly and that the pawls engage correctly when pulled.
Routine maintenance involves checking the condition of the starter rope and lubricating the return spring mechanism. If the engine is difficult to start, it is worth checking the condition of the pawls — wear can cause slipping and failure to engage with the flywheel.
A starter is most often replaced because of a snapped starter rope, a damaged return spring or worn metal pawls. Symptoms of failure include no resistance when pulling the rope, the rope failing to retract into the housing, or a characteristic clicking sound without the engine crankshaft turning.
