Optical refractometer for testing vehicle service fluids. The device measures the refractive index, which makes it possible to determine the freezing point of fluids and the density of battery electrolyte.
The device uses the phenomenon of refraction at the boundary between media of different optical density. The refractometric method provides a fast reading without the need for a power supply. Simply place a drop of the test fluid on the measuring prism and read the result from the scale.
The refractometer has separate scales for propylene glycol, ethylene glycol and ethanol-based fluids. Each scale shows the freezing point in degrees Celsius, which removes the need for conversion tables.
The electrolyte density scale makes it possible to assess the state of charge of a lead-acid battery. Measuring electrolyte density (sulphuric acid solution) is one of the basic methods for diagnosing batteries in service.
The kit includes a pipette for taking fluid samples and a cloth for cleaning the prism. Everything is stored in a plastic case that protects the device from mechanical damage and contamination.
| Manufacturer | GEKO |
| Model | G02662 |
| Device type | Optical refractometer |
| Measurement method | Refractive index |
| Measurement range | Coolants (propylene glycol, ethylene glycol), screen wash (ethanol), battery electrolyte |
| Reading | Optical, from the scale |
| Power supply | Not required (optical device) |
| Kit contents | Refractometer, pipette, cleaning cloth, case |
Before measuring, clean the prism with the cloth. Then use the pipette to place 2-3 drops of the test fluid on the prism surface and close the cover. Once the sample temperature has stabilised, read the value from the scale, looking through the eyepiece towards a light source. The boundary between the light and dark areas indicates the measurement result.
After each measurement, clean the prism thoroughly with a soft cloth moistened with distilled or demineralised water. Avoid abrasive substances and sharp tools that could scratch the optical surface. Store in a dry place in the original case.
The refractometer can be calibrated using distilled water at 20°C. The boundary between the dark and light areas should indicate the zero point on the scale. If the reading is offset, use the calibration adjustment screw (if fitted to the model).
