A set of specialist spanners for removing and fitting shock absorber mountings on popular car models. It contains five spanners in sizes matched to the mounting specifications used by VW, Audi, Mercedes and Austin.
Each spanner in the set is matched to a specific application on particular vehicle models. The 10.5 mm, 12.5 mm and 14 mm sizes, together with two 14.5 mm spanners, cover the most common mounting standards used on VW, Audi, Mercedes and Austin vehicles.
Shock absorber spanners differ from standard sockets in their design, which is tailored to working in the confined space of the suspension. They allow the nuts securing the shock absorber piston rod to be tightened while holding the rod to stop it turning.
The set includes spanners for work on both the front and rear axles of the vehicle. The different sizes reflect the varying suspension designs used by manufacturers depending on the vehicle model and generation.
The selection of spanner sizes matches the mounting specifications used across a wide range of VAG group models and selected Mercedes and Austin vehicles, making the set a versatile tool for workshops servicing European cars.

The applications listed are examples and refer to typical mounting configurations. Before starting work, verify the actual size of the shock absorber securing nut on the vehicle being worked on, as the specification may vary with the year of manufacture, trim level or suspension type.
Shock absorber spanners are essential when replacing shock absorbers, repairing suspension and reconditioning running gear components. They allow the nuts securing the shock absorber piston rod to the upper mounting (on the front axle) or the lower mounting (on the rear axle) to be loosened and tightened safely, depending on the suspension design.
When working on shock absorbers, it is essential to hold the piston rod to stop it turning. The usual approach is to combine a shock absorber spanner with an Allen key or a special rod-holding tool. The spanners in the G02785 set work with the typical workshop tools used for this type of job.
Before removing a shock absorber, relieve the load on the suspension by raising the vehicle on a lift. When fitting a new shock absorber, the tightening torque for the top mounting nut should follow the vehicle manufacturer's specification, typically 50-80 Nm for VAG models.
