The Kraft&Dele KD215 splitting axe is designed for splitting firewood and larger logs by hand. Its forged carbon steel head is permanently bonded to a fibreglass handle, which sets it apart from tools with wooden handles in terms of resistance to cracking and to the head working loose.
The blade and the poll are forged and then sharpened with grinding stones using diamond technology. Forged carbon steel has a uniform structure and high hardness, which translates into a durable cutting edge and the ability to re-sharpen the axe repeatedly without losing the blade geometry.
The core of the handle is made of fibreglass, which is more resistant to breakage and vibration than wood. The head is fitted by hot casting — the molten fibreglass compound fills the inside of the poll, creating a bond that cannot come apart. A special pressing inside the poll provides additional protection against the head working loose.
In the upper section of the handle — directly beneath the head — a built-in metal bracket is used. Its purpose is to absorb the lateral forces and vibration generated on impact, which reduces the risk of the handle cracking at the critical point where the head is seated.
The outer layer of the handle is made of a material resistant to weather, scratches and oils. The contoured shape of the grip with its non-slip texture ensures a secure hold in both dry and wet working conditions. The surface requires no impregnation or maintenance.

A splitting axe weighing 3 kg and measuring 860 mm falls into the category of tools for working with medium and large firewood. The length of the handle allows two-handed work with a full swing, while the weight of the head generates sufficient impact force for splitting along the grain.
Splitting axes weighing 3 kg perform well with dense-grained hardwoods (beech, oak, hornbeam) and with logs up to around 30–40 cm in diameter. For softwoods with a looser structure, lighter models are sufficient. For very large logs above 40 cm, pre-scoring or the use of a mechanical log splitter is recommended.
A fibreglass handle requires no oil impregnation or seasonal maintenance, unlike wooden handles. The outer surface simply needs to be kept clean — it is resistant to water, mud and most oils.
The carbon steel blade should be protected against prolonged contact with moisture in order to prevent surface corrosion. After the season, the blade should ideally be wiped with a lightly oiled cloth. The cutting edge can be sharpened with a stone or an axe sharpener, restoring the factory geometry.
Before each use, check the condition of the joint between the head and the handle. Although a hot-cast fitting is durable, regular inspection is standard practice with impact tools.
