Step Drill Bit 4-32mm GEKO G38500

A high-speed steel (HSS) step drill bit with a TiN coating that allows holes to be drilled in 15 diameters without changing tools. Designed for working non-ferrous metals, steel sheet and plastics.

Diameter range4-32 mm
MaterialHSS steel
CoatingTiN
Number of steps15 steps

Technical features

Stepped design

The drill bit has 15 steps at 2 mm intervals (4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32 mm). This removes the need to keep a set of separate drill bits, speeding up work when drilling holes of different diameters in the same material.

High-speed steel (HSS)

HSS (high-speed steel) is a tool steel containing tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium. It is characterised by resistance to the high temperatures generated during drilling and retains the hardness of the cutting edges at the rotational speeds typical of metal drill bits.

TiN coating (titanium nitride)

A TiN layer applied by PVD increases surface hardness to around 2300 HV, reduces the coefficient of friction and acts as a thermal barrier. In practice this means a longer tool life, the ability to work at higher speeds and a lower risk of swarf sticking to the drill bit.

Cylindrical shank

The drill bit has a cylindrical shank, which ensures compatibility with standard drill chucks (jawed or keyless). The shank diameter is matched to the parameters of the drill bit and to typical hand drills and pillar drills.

Applications

  • Drilling fixing holes in steel sheet up to 3 mm thick
  • Working non-ferrous metals: aluminium, brass, copper
  • Drilling holes in plastic enclosures and panels
  • Enlarging existing holes without changing the drill bit
  • Electrical and electronic installation work (holes for grommets and connectors)
  • Model making and prototyping
  • Drilling PCBs and laminates
  • Drilling aluminium profiles and thin-sheet structures

Use and maintenance

Operating parameters

For steel sheet up to 2 mm thick, use a speed of 500-800 rpm. For aluminium and brass, the speed can be increased to 1200 rpm. Use cooling (emulsion, cutting oil) when working with metals, as this extends the life of the TiN coating and improves hole quality.

Drilling technique

Start drilling from the lowest step to keep the drill bit centred. Apply steady, moderate pressure — too much force can cause overheating and damage the cutting edge. Once through the material, reduce the pressure to avoid tearing the material on the underside.

Maintenance

After use, clean the drill bit of swarf and material residue. Check the condition of the cutting edges — damage to the TiN coating (chipping, wear) indicates that the drill bit needs replacing. Store in the original packaging to protect the cutting edges from mechanical damage.
