The YATO YT-61703 step drill bit is a high-speed steel (HSS) cutting tool designed for working wood. It lets you drill holes of varying diameters, chamfer edges and deburr without having to change tools.
The conical cutting geometry, with steps marked every 1 mm, allows precise drilling of holes from 6 to 15 mm in diameter. It removes the need for a set of drill bits covering this range, which cuts down working time on projects that call for a variety of hole sizes.
The cutting edge is made from high-speed steel (HSS), which resists the high temperatures generated during cutting. It keeps its hardness and sharp cutting edges under intensive use on both softwood and hardwood.
The 6 mm shank diameter makes the bit compatible with standard chucks on corded and cordless drills. The smooth shank surface minimises slipping when the bit is tightened in a keyless chuck.
The maximum working speed of 2000 rpm follows from the stepped geometry and the working diameter. Exceeding this figure can overheat the cutting edge and reduce cut quality. Most drills have variable speed control, so the speed can be set to suit this requirement.

The speed should not exceed 2000 rpm. When drilling hardwood, lower speeds (1200-1500 rpm) and greater pressure are recommended; for softwood, use higher speeds (1800-2000 rpm) and less pressure. The feed rate should be matched to the hardness of the material, avoiding excessive pressure that causes overheating.
The 6 mm shank requires a keyless or keyed chuck with a capacity covering this diameter. Before starting work, check that the bit is seated axially with no runout. Play in the chuck leads to uneven drilling and damage to the cutting edge.
After use, clean the bit of swarf and resin with a brush or compressed air. Periodic sharpening or replacement is necessary when the bit needs extra pressure or leaves burn marks. Storing it in a dry place prevents corrosion of the HSS surface.
