Torque-angle tightening is a two-stage procedure used on critical bolts. In the first stage the bolt is tightened to a specified torque (e.g. 40 Nm), which provides an initial, even preload. In the second stage the bolt is tightened through a precisely defined angle (e.g. 90° or 180°), which ensures the target clamping force is reached.
The angle method removes the effect of friction on the final bolt preload. In joints with gaskets, or in the case of torque-to-yield (single-use) bolts, torque-only tightening may be insufficient. Controlling the tightening angle ensures repeatable preload regardless of thread surface condition and lubrication.
Before starting a measurement, clip the arm onto a stable structural component that will not rotate during tightening. The arm should be taut but not overstretched. After the initial torque tightening, set the angle gauge pointer to zero, then tighten through the required angle in accordance with the vehicle or equipment manufacturer's instructions.
After use, clean the angle gauge of dirt and oil. The measuring mechanism requires its accuracy to be checked periodically. Storing it in a dry place prevents corrosion of the metal parts and maintains measurement precision over the long term.
The angle gauge works with torque wrenches fitted with a 1/2" square drive. Before buying, make sure your torque wrench has this drive size. The angle gauge is fitted between the wrench and the socket, which lengthens the assembly by about 8-10 cm – this must be taken into account when working in confined spaces.
