Mushroom-type repair plugs designed to seal punctures in radial, cross-ply, tube and tubeless tyres. The design combines a sealing stem with a patch on the inside of the tyre to give a two-point seal of the damage — both in the puncture channel and on the crown surface.
The 6 mm diameter stem fills the puncture channel, while the 45 mm diameter patch bonds to the inside of the tyre crown. This arrangement eliminates the risk of the repair reopening under air pressure, which sets mushroom plugs apart from string inserts used as a temporary repair.
The edge of the patch has a rim that prevents it curling during fitting and in service. This matters when repairing tyres with greater internal curvature — without the rim the patch edge may not sit evenly, which weakens the bond with the tyre rubber.
Fitting requires neither a vulcaniser nor a heat source. The plug is bonded with cold tyre cement (sold separately), so the repair can be carried out in workshop conditions without specialist heat equipment. Curing time depends on the cement used.
The plug material adapts to the shape of the puncture channel and the inner surface of the tyre. Flexibility is particularly important in radial tyres, where the crown flexes dynamically — a rigid repair could crack as the tyre deforms while driving.

6 mm repair plugs are intended for repairing punctures in the tread area of the tyre. The 6 mm stem diameter matches the typical damage caused by nails, screws and other sharp objects of similar thickness.
The stem diameter should be slightly larger than the puncture channel — a 6 mm plug is the correct choice for holes from about 4 to 6 mm in diameter. Smaller holes require a plug with a thinner stem (e.g. 4 mm), larger ones an 8 mm or 10 mm plug. Before fitting, the hole should be cleaned and levelled with a tyre reamer, which ensures the cement bonds evenly along the full length of the channel.
Repairing with a mushroom plug requires the tyre to be removed from the rim, which sets this method apart from external repairs (e.g. string plugs). The procedure covers the following steps:
