Universal Drill Bit 12 mm HEX YT-44787 YATO

Universal drill bit with a 1/4" hex shank, designed for drilling into metal, concrete, ceramic, wood, aluminium and plastics. The YG6X tungsten carbide tip ensures durability when working in materials of varying hardness.

Diameter12 mm
Shank typeHEX 1/4" (6.3 mm)
Tip hardness89–91 HRC
Tip materialYG6X tungsten carbide

Technical Features of the Universal Drill Bit

YG6X tungsten carbide tip

A hardness of 89–91 HRC means wear resistance comparable to industrial diamond. The tungsten carbide tip stays sharp even when drilling into concrete and ceramic, which removes the need for frequent tool changes.

Hardened steel body

A body hardness of 42–45 HRC provides flexibility together with resistance to twisting. This combination of properties prevents the bit from cracking when working with materials of different structures.

1/4" hex shank

The 6.3 mm standard fits cordless drills, impact drivers and impact wrenches. The hex profile eliminates slipping in the chuck when drilling into hard materials.

Flute geometry for swarf clearance

The special shape of the spiral flutes speeds up the removal of swarf from the hole. Efficient material clearance reduces friction and overheating of the bit, which extends its service life.

Applications of the Universal Drill Bit

  • Drilling fixing holes in concrete walls for wall plugs
  • Preparing holes in ceramic tiles for bathroom fixtures
  • Drilling into steel and aluminium profiles when assembling structures
  • Making holes in wood for carpentry and finishing work
  • Drilling into plastics during installation work
  • Renovation work requiring a single tool for different materials
  • Fitting fixtures in rooms with mixed wall structures
  • Drilling into composite materials and laminates

Tool Compatibility

The 1/4" HEX shank (6.3 mm) is a standard fitting on cordless and pneumatic power tools. The drill bit works with:

Cordless Drills

All models with a quick-change chuck that accepts 1/4" hex bits. The clutch should be set to maximum torque when drilling into concrete and metal.

Impact Drivers

The impact action increases drilling efficiency in concrete and masonry. Impact mode should be switched off when working with ceramic and glass to avoid cracking the material.

Impact Wrenches

Compatibility with impact wrenches makes it possible to drill into thick steel profiles. The high torque requires the workpiece to be clamped securely.

Hardness Parameters and What They Mean

Hardness measured on the Rockwell scale (HRC) determines a material's resistance to indentation. With a hardness of 89–91 HRC, the YG6X tungsten carbide tip ranks among the hardest tool materials, second only to diamond (above 90 HRC). The body at 42–45 HRC is a heat-treated tool steel that combines strength with impact resistance.

The difference in hardness between the tip and the body has practical significance. The hard tip penetrates the material and retains its cutting edge, while the flexible body absorbs vibration and prevents cracking under overload.

Use and Maintenance

Before starting work, check that the drill bit is securely mounted in the chuck. A loose fit leads to runout and faster tool wear. With cordless drills, it is advisable to fully charge the battery before drilling into concrete and metal.

Cooling while drilling

When drilling into metal, cooling with water or cutting oil is recommended. Overheating above 200°C causes the steel to lose its temper and hardness. Ceramic and glass need to be drilled at low speed with continuous cooling.

Cleaning after use

After finishing work, remove dust and swarf from the flutes with a brush or compressed air. Trapped debris increases friction during the next use and accelerates wear. Storing in a dry place prevents corrosion of the steel body.

Personal protective equipment

Safety glasses to protect against flying fragments are mandatory when drilling. Drilling into concrete generates silica dust that requires an FFP2-class dust mask. Work gloves protect the hands from the hot drill bit after intensive use.
