YATO YT-33870 Hex Shank Wood Drill Bit 16mm

A 16 mm wood drill bit with a 1/4" hex shank. Made from HSS 4241 steel and designed for precise drilling in softwood, hardwood and wood-based materials.

MaterialHSS 4241 steel
Shank typeHEX 1/4" (6.3 mm)
ModelYT-33870

Technical features of the wood drill bit

HSS 4241 steel

HSS 4241 high-speed steel contains cobalt additives, which increase hardness and resistance to abrasion. The 4241 designation refers to the chemical composition: 4% chromium, 2% vanadium, 4% molybdenum, 1% tungsten. The material retains a sharp cutting edge even under intensive use on hard wood species.

1/4" hex shank

The 1/4" (6.3 mm) hexagonal shank provides a secure fit in impact drills, cordless drivers and standard electric drills. The hex profile eliminates slipping during drilling and allows rapid bit changes.

Centring point

A precise centring point allows accurate positioning of the bit before drilling begins. It prevents the tool from slipping across the wood surface, which is particularly important when drilling at an angle or into smooth, hard materials.

Spiral flute geometry

Spiral flutes clear chips from the hole during drilling, reducing resistance and preventing the bit from overheating. The spiral design reduces the feed force required and speeds up drilling, especially in deep holes.

Applications of the 16 mm wood drill bit

  • Drilling assembly holes for 16 mm wooden dowels in furniture making
  • Preparing holes for structural screws in beams and framing components
  • Drilling chipboard and fibreboard during furniture assembly
  • Drilling holes in plywood and MDF and HDF boards
  • Renovation work on timber building structures
  • Drilling exotic hardwoods and hard native species (oak, beech, ash)
  • Preparing holes for furniture connectors and fittings
  • Use in carpentry work requiring a 16 mm diameter

Tool compatibility

The 1/4" hex shank is standard on most cordless drills, impact drivers and electric drills with a keyless chuck. Before buying, check that your drill has a chuck that accepts hex shanks. With drills fitted with a conventional three-jaw chuck, an adapter may be required.

Use and maintenance

When drilling wood, use an appropriate rotational speed – for a 16 mm diameter the optimum range is 800-1,500 rpm in softwood and 600-1,000 rpm in hardwood. Excessive speed can scorch the wood and accelerate wear of the cutting edge.

After each use, clean chips and wood dust off the drill bit. Sharpening the cutting edges periodically extends the service life of the tool. With intensive use, lubricating the shank is recommended, as this makes fitting and removal easier.

Drilling tips

When drilling through holes, place a backing piece of timber under the workpiece to prevent the wood from splintering as the bit exits. When drilling deep holes, withdraw the bit periodically to clear chips from the flutes.
