HSS 4241 step drill bit with TiN coating for drilling variable-diameter holes in metal, stainless steel, sheet and plastics. The stepped design removes the need for a set of drill bits in different diameters.
An iron alloy with tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and chromium. A hardness of 62-65 HRC provides resistance to abrasion when drilling materials with a strength of up to 900 N/mm². It retains its cutting properties at temperatures up to 600°C.
A ceramic layer 2-3 μm thick applied by PVD. It increases surface hardness to 80 HRC, reduces the coefficient of friction by 40% and extends tool life three to four times compared with unpolished HSS. Its characteristic gold colour.
The conical tip of the bit prevents it from slipping when starting to drill on smooth and rounded surfaces. It removes the need for centre punching, which speeds up the work and improves precision.
The shank with three milled flats ensures a secure hold in drill chucks and drill drivers. It transmits full torque without slipping, which matters when drilling larger-diameter holes in thick materials.

The step drill bit requires a drill or drill driver with a keyless or keyed chuck with a minimum capacity of 13 mm. A tool power of at least 600 W is recommended for metalwork. When drilling holes above 15 mm in steel, it is worth using tools with variable speed control and the hammer action switched off.
The HSS 4241 step drill bit with TiN coating requires an appropriate rotational speed matched to the material and hole diameter. For structural steel, 300-500 rpm is recommended at a diameter of 10 mm and 150-250 rpm at 20 mm. For aluminium, the speed can be doubled. Stainless steel requires the speed to be reduced by 30-40% and the use of a coolant or cutting oil.
During drilling, a steady, moderate pressure should be applied. Too much pressure causes overheating and shortens the life of the cutting edge, while too little polishes the material instead of cutting it. In sheet thicker than 2 mm, step drilling is worth using – start with a smaller diameter and gradually enlarge the hole.
After finishing work, clean swarf off the bit with a brush or compressed air. The TiN coating does not require lubrication, but storing the bit in a dry place prevents corrosion of the shank. Blunting of the cutting edge shows as increased resistance, smoke and discoloured swarf – in that case the bit should be sharpened or replaced.
