The YATO YT-84949 chainsaw chain is the cutting component of a chainsaw, designed for cutting clean and moderately soiled wood. Made from Mn65 manganese steel, it features kickback and vibration reduction.
A 3/8 inch pitch (9.525 mm) is the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by two. This standard ensures compatibility with most mid-range chainsaws. The 1.3 mm gauge must match the guide bar groove width – check the guide bar specifications in your chainsaw documentation before buying.
The semi-chisel tooth geometry has a rounded cutting edge profile. This shape offers a good balance between cutting performance and resistance to blunting on contact with contaminated wood. It requires less precise sharpening than full-chisel teeth.
The Mn65 manganese steel alloy contains around 0.65% manganese, which increases the hardness and wear resistance of the cutting components. This material keeps the teeth sharp during intensive use, extending the intervals between sharpening. This steel is the standard in chains for professional and semi-professional applications.
Chainsaw kickback occurs when the nose of the guide bar strikes an obstacle or when the chain becomes pinched. The kickback reduction system includes specially shaped depth gauges that reduce the aggressiveness of the cut in the danger zone. The "91" marking indicates a specific configuration of the chain's safety parameters.

Before buying a chain, check three parameters in your chainsaw manual: guide bar length (in inches or centimetres), chain pitch (most commonly 1/4", .325", 3/8" or .404") and guide bar groove width (typically 1.1 mm, 1.3 mm, 1.5 mm or 1.6 mm). A mismatch in any of these parameters will prevent correct fitting and safe operation.
The "91" code is a manufacturer's marking that indicates a specific combination of chain parameters: tooth type, depth gauge height and safety link configuration. This makes it easier to identify the correct replacement chain without having to measure every parameter.
A chainsaw chain needs regular sharpening – blunt teeth force you to apply more pressure, which accelerates guide bar wear and increases the risk of kickback. Check the chain tension before every use – a correctly tensioned chain sits against the guide bar but can be pulled about 3-5 mm away from it at the midpoint.
Chain lubrication is handled automatically by the chainsaw's oil system. Check the chain oil level regularly and top it up before starting work. A lack of lubrication leads to overheating, rapid wear and the possibility of the chain snapping during use.
When replacing the chain, make sure the direction of the cutter teeth matches the direction of rotation – the teeth on the top of the guide bar should point towards the nose of the bar. Fitting the chain the wrong way round makes cutting impossible and may damage the saw.
Working with a chainsaw requires the use of: a protective helmet with a face shield or safety glasses, hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, cut-resistant trousers or leg protectors, and safety boots with a toe cap and cut-resistant insert. Clothing in bright colours that improve visibility is also recommended.
