Garden shears with a wavy 65 Mn carbon steel blade and PTFE coating, designed for trimming hedges and ornamental shrubs. The aluminium handle construction with ergonomic TPR grips keeps the weight low despite a working length of 610 mm.
65 Mn carbon steel offers greater hardness and abrasion resistance than standard tool steels. The wavy cutting edge stops branches slipping during the cut, which improves efficiency when trimming dense hedges. The blade copes with branches up to 6 mm in diameter, which covers the young shoots of most ornamental shrub species.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a low-friction coating that reduces the build-up of plant sap and resins on the blade surface. In practice this means fewer breaks to clean the tool during intensive work and easier cleaning of the blade once trimming is finished. The coating also extends blade life by protecting it against corrosion.
The adjustment mechanism lets you set the pressure between the blades using the nut. When cutting young, soft shoots, reducing the tension gives a smoother cut, while on thicker branches increasing it improves stability and precision. Checking this setting regularly compensates for the natural wear of the blades during use.
Aluminium handles give the tool rigidity at a weight of 1070 g, which matters during prolonged trimming at shoulder height. Soft TPR (thermoplastic rubber) inserts at the grip points absorb vibration and prevent sore hands. Buffers at the point where the handles meet reduce strain on the wrists when the shears are opened and closed repeatedly.

Before you start trimming, check the blade tension and adjust it with the nut if necessary. The blades should sit tightly together but move smoothly without excessive resistance. It is worth making a few test cuts on branches of different thicknesses to check the setting.
After use, remove plant debris from the blades with a brush or cloth. For heavy resin deposits, use a resin solvent or isopropyl alcohol. Once clean, apply a thin layer of protective oil to the blades. Store the shears in a dry place with the blade guard fitted.
Wavy blades require specialist sharpening that preserves the original wave profile. Professional garden tool sharpening services are recommended. Attempting to sharpen them yourself with a file can damage the blade geometry and reduce cut quality.
When trimming hedges, wear protective gloves and safety glasses to guard against flying debris. When working at heights above 2 metres, use stable ladders or platforms. Do not cut branches thicker than 6 mm, as this can damage the mechanism or put excessive strain on your wrists.
