YT-05992 YATO Oil Drain Plug Key Set
A professional 20-piece set for engine oil changes, containing hex, square and triangular bits plus specialist bits for VAG vehicles and unusual drain plugs. Made from CrV chrome vanadium steel with a 3/8" drive compatible with standard ratchets.
Features of the oil drain plug key set
CrV chrome vanadium steel
A material with increased hardness and resistance to mechanical wear. The chrome vanadium alloy increases torsional strength and prevents corrosion on contact with engine oil and service fluids. It guarantees many years of use in workshop conditions.
3/8 inch drive with flexible extension
The standard 3/8" (9.5 mm) size ensures compatibility with most ratchets and torque wrenches used in workshops. The 200 mm flexible extension allows access to drain plugs in the tight spaces of the underbody and gearbox.
Complete 20-piece bit set
Includes hex (8-17 mm), square (7-14 mm), a 10 mm triangular bit, Security Spline M16, a bit for VAG plastic sump plugs and Torx T45 VAG. Covers 95% of the drain plug designs used in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles from European and Asian manufacturers.
Metal carry case

Bit types and their applications
Hex bits
The most common type of drain plug, used by most manufacturers. Sizes 8-17 mm cover Japanese (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda), Korean (Hyundai, Kia) and European standards. The 17 mm bit matches the typical plugs found on PSA vehicles (Peugeot, Citroën).
Square bits
Used mainly in gearboxes and drive axles. Sizes 7-14 mm cover the designs found in French and Italian vehicles and in some BMW models. The square profile distributes pressure better than a hex when plugs are tightly seized.
10 mm triangular bit
Used on selected Renault, Opel and Fiat models. The triangular profile makes it difficult to unscrew the plug without a specialist tool, which is intended to prevent unauthorised interference with the lubrication system.
Security Spline M16
A multi-spline profile with a central security pin, used in premium vehicles (BMW 3/5/7 Series, Mercedes C/E-Class). It requires a dedicated bit with a central hole. Standard multi-spline keys without a hole will not fit this type of plug.
VAG bits (plastic sump plugs and Torx T45)
Volkswagen AG group vehicles often use plastic drain plugs with an internal square or Torx profile. The plastic sump plug bit has a special shape that prevents the plastic from cracking. Torx T45 is found on DSG and AG automatic gearboxes.
Use and maintenance
Before use, check the type of drain plug in the vehicle documentation or by inspection. Fitting the wrong bit can damage the plug profile and make it harder to remove. When refitting the plug, it is advisable to use a torque wrench set to the tightening torque specified by the manufacturer (typically 20-30 Nm for aluminium plugs, 30-45 Nm for steel plugs).
After finishing the job, clean any oil residue from the bits using a degreaser or white spirit. Moisture and oil contamination can lead to surface corrosion of the CrV steel. Storing the tools in the metal case protects them from mechanical damage during transport.
The 200 mm flexible extension requires care when working with high torques. Excessive bending may cause permanent deformation or cracking. Where plugs are seized, it is advisable to use a rigid 3/8" extension instead of the flexible extension.
