A compact manual sharpener with four different working surfaces – diamond, tungsten and ceramic – letting you carry out the full sharpening process with a single tool. Designed for maintaining cutting tools in the workshop and garden.
Diamond grit has the highest hardness of all abrasive materials. This surface is used for the initial shaping of the edge – it removes chips, smooths out nicks and gives the blade the correct profile before further sharpening.
Tungsten provides fast, aggressive material removal, which makes it possible to quickly restore the sharpness of badly blunt tools and to level out minor edge damage. An intermediate stage between coarse sharpening and finishing.
Fine-grained ceramic is used for the final smoothing and polishing of the edge after the earlier sharpening stages. It removes the scratches left by coarser abrasives and improves the cutting quality of the tool.
The contoured handle makes it easier to maintain a constant angle while drawing the sharpener along the blade – which has a direct effect on the quality of the sharpened edge. A hole in the handle allows the tool to be hung on a tool board or workshop hook.

The correct sharpening process runs from the most aggressive abrasive surface to the finest. With this sharpener, the recommended order is: diamond surface (edge shaping and removal of chips) → tungsten surface (levelling and restoring sharpness) → ceramic surface (smoothing and polishing). Skipping the intermediate stages can result in an uneven cutting edge.
The effectiveness of sharpening depends largely on maintaining a constant angle between the sharpener and the blade. For most kitchen knives this is 15–20°, and for garden tools 25–30°. The contoured handle of the YT-87470 sharpener makes the angle easier to control, but for tools that require a precise angle it is worth using an angle guide as an aid.
