Metric threads - the basics
Metric thread designation
The "M" prefix before the number indicates a metric thread conforming to the ISO standard. The number specifies the outside diameter of the thread in millimetres. For example, M6 denotes a thread with a diameter of 6 mm. Metric nuts fit only bolts and screws with a matching metric thread - they are not compatible with the imperial (UNC/UNF) threads used on American equipment.
Checking compatibility
Before using a nut, make sure that the diameter and thread pitch match the bolt or stud. The nut should thread on smoothly without excessive play or jamming. The set contains nuts with the standard thread pitch for each size (for example, M6 has a pitch of 1.0 mm and M8 has a pitch of 1.25 mm).
