4-Flute Wood Drill Bit 20 mm HEX YT-44685 YATO

A four-edge drill bit made from carbon steel, designed for drilling 20 mm diameter holes in various types of wood. The four-edge design ensures faster drilling and cleaner hole edges compared with traditional twist drill bits.

Drill bit diameter20 mm
Shank typeHEX (hexagonal)
Working length165 mm
Steel hardnessHRC 40-45

Wood drill bit technical features

Four-edge design

Four cutting edges distribute the cutting forces evenly around the circumference of the bit, which reduces resistance during drilling and minimises the risk of the material splintering as the bit exits the hole. This design is particularly effective in hardwood and chipboard.

Flute geometry

The specially designed flute clears chips from the hole during drilling, preventing them from building up and overheating the tool. The flute design helps maintain a perpendicular drilling angle, which translates into accurate holes.

Hexagonal HEX shank

Hexagonal shanks transmit torque better than cylindrical shanks, eliminating slippage in the tool chuck. Compatible with drill drivers, drills and impact drivers fitted with a quick-release chuck or HEX adapter.

Carbon steel HRC 40-45

A steel hardness of 40-45 HRC (Rockwell scale) provides a balance between wear resistance and flexibility. This material retains edge sharpness under intensive use while minimising the risk of cracking under lateral loads.

Applications of the four-edge drill bit

  • Drilling assembly holes in solid wood of various species
  • Drilling holes for dowels and furniture screws during furniture assembly
  • Drilling into chipboard, MDF and plywood
  • Carpentry work requiring precise holes with smooth edges
  • Electrical installations in timber structures
  • Fitting connectors in timber frame construction
  • Renovation work on timber building structures
  • Preparing holes for joints and fittings in joinery

Tool compatibility

The HEX-shank bit works with drill drivers and drills fitted with a quick-release chuck (usually 1/4 inch). For power tools with a keyless (jaw) chuck, a HEX-to-cylindrical adapter is required. Cordless impact drivers with a HEX socket allow the bit to be mounted directly.

Use and maintenance

Before starting to drill, make sure the bit is correctly secured in the tool chuck. When working in hardwoods, lower speeds (500-800 rpm) with greater pressure are recommended, whereas in softwood higher speeds (1000-1500 rpm) with less pressure are optimal.

Regularly cleaning chips and resin from the flute extends the life of the tool. After finishing work, remove any remaining material with a brush and protect the bit from moisture. Blunt edges are indicated by increased resistance during drilling and poorer hole edge quality – in this case, consider sharpening or replacing the bit.

The HRC hardness parameter

The Rockwell scale (HRC) determines material hardness by measuring the depth of penetration of a diamond indenter. Values of 40-45 HRC indicate medium hardness, typical of woodworking tools. Higher hardness (above 50 HRC) increases wear resistance but makes the material more brittle, which in the case of wood drill bits can lead to cracking under lateral loads.
