The D1 kit meets the requirements for first aid equipment in motor vehicles. National regulations may specify the obligation to carry a first aid kit in a vehicle and its expiry period, which is usually 3 to 5 years from the date of manufacture. Regular checking of dressing expiry dates is recommended, and the kit should be replaced once it has passed its expiry date.
The first aid kit should be stored in an easily accessible place, protected from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The contents should be checked every 6 months and used items replenished. Dressings lose their sterility after the expiry date given by the manufacturer.
Before administering first aid, secure the scene of the incident and call the emergency services. Protective gloves should be worn whenever there is contact with blood or wounds. Sterile dressings should be applied directly from the packaging, avoiding contact with the sterile side. Conforming bandages are applied with moderate tension, checking the circulation below the dressing.
A triangular bandage allows a fractured or dislocated limb to be immobilised quickly. The guide supplied with the kit includes step-by-step instructions for applying a sling and pressure dressings. In the case of serious injuries, first aid is limited to protecting the wounds and sustaining vital functions until the paramedics arrive.
