HSS Cylindrical Ball Nose Rotary Burr YT-61715 YATO

The YT-61715 cylindrical ball nose rotary burr is made from HSS 4241 high-speed steel and is designed for working steel and aluminium in straight and electric die grinders. It is a tool for precision edge milling, deburring and shaping holes in metals.

MaterialHSS 4241
Shank diameter6 mm
Working length25 mm
Max. speed30,000 rpm

Technical features of the HSS rotary burr

HSS 4241 high-speed steel

An alloy containing 1% molybdenum, characterised by greater hardness and wear resistance than basic HSS steels. It retains cutting edge sharpness when working ferrous and non-ferrous metals, which means the tool lasts longer without the need for sharpening.

Ball nose geometry

The rounded-edge burr shape allows smooth transitions and chamfers to be produced without sharp edges. It is particularly useful for finishing weld edges and profiles, where even material removal is required without the risk of cutting too deeply.

Speed up to 30,000 rpm

This parameter defines the maximum safe speed of the tool. Higher speeds when working aluminium (20,000-30,000 rpm) give a smoother surface finish, while lower values (10,000-15,000 rpm) are recommended for steel to prevent overheating and loss of cutting properties.

6 mm shank - the die grinder standard

A shank diameter of 6 mm is the most common standard for straight electric and pneumatic die grinders. It ensures compatibility with ER11 collets and with most quick-change chucks used in 400-1200 W workshop and industrial tools.

Applications of the cylindrical rotary burr

  • Finishing the edges of steel and aluminium profiles after cutting
  • Deburring drilled holes in sheet metal and profiles
  • Chamfering the edges of metal components before welding
  • Removing weld beads and weld irregularities
  • Shaping and enlarging holes in thin sheet metal
  • Finishing surfaces after machining
  • Cutting grooves and recesses in soft metals
  • Removing rust and coatings from metal surfaces

Using and maintaining the HSS burr

Selecting machining parameters

For steel, a speed of 10,000-15,000 rpm with a moderate feed is recommended. For aluminium, higher speeds of 20,000-30,000 rpm can be used, which gives a better surface finish. Too low a speed can cause swarf to clog, while too high a speed on steel can lead to overheating and loss of hardness in the cutting edges.

Mounting in the die grinder

The burr shank should be inserted into the collet to a depth of at least 15 mm to ensure a stable hold and avoid radial run-out. Before mounting, clean swarf and dirt from the shank and from the inside of the collet. Run-out can be checked by watching the tip of the burr while it turns slowly.

Tool maintenance

After use, clean swarf from the burr with a brass wire brush and remove any remaining material with solvent. Periodic oiling of the shank with machine oil prevents corrosion and makes fitting easier. Storing the burr in a dry place, in separate slots or tool trays, protects the cutting edges from damage.
