A machine threading die made from HSS high-speed steel, designed for cutting metric M2 and M7 threads in non-ferrous metals and structural steel.
HSS (high-speed steel) is characterised by high hardness and excellent wear resistance. The hardened steel retains its cutting properties even at elevated temperatures, which translates into a long tool life during intensive work.
The die cuts two sizes of metric thread. M2 (nominal diameter 2 mm) is used in precision engineering, while M7 (nominal diameter 7 mm) is found in medium-sized mechanical assemblies.
The specially shaped cutting edges distribute the cutting forces evenly during threading, which minimises the risk of damaging the workpiece and extends the service life of the die.
The die is designed for use in machine holders, which allows precise guidance of the tool and produces threads with a high degree of dimensional accuracy.

Before you start cutting a thread, drill a hole of the diameter appropriate to the thread size. For M2 the hole diameter is 1.6 mm and for M7 it is 6.0 mm. The hole should be perpendicular to the surface and free from burrs.
Always use a suitable lubricant when cutting threads. For steel, machine oil or a dedicated threading fluid is recommended; for aluminium, paraffin or methylated spirits; brass can be cut dry or with minimal lubrication.
After use, clean the die of swarf and any residue of the workpiece material, then protect it against corrosion with a thin film of oil. Store it in a dry place, ideally in a dedicated case that protects the cutting edges from damage.
When working with the die, wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying swarf, together with work gloves and protective clothing. During machine work, take particular care when fitting and removing the tool.
