A threading die designed for cutting and restoring M5 x 0.8 mm external threads by hand. Made from HSS high-speed steel, it meets the requirements of the DIN 223 standard, which translates into a consistent thread profile and compatibility with standard die stocks.
HSS (high-speed steel) is an alloy characterised by high hardness and wear resistance. The cutting edges stay sharp over a long service life, which matters when working with various types of metal — structural steel, alloy steel or soft aluminium.
The DIN 223 standard specifies the external dimensions of a round die — body diameter, the layout of the holes for the die stock's clamping screws, and manufacturing tolerances. This makes the tool interchangeable with die stocks from other manufacturers that meet the same standard.
The flutes in the die body clear swarf during thread cutting. Effective swarf removal reduces the risk of thread stripping, tool overheating and clogged flutes, which is particularly important when working without coolant or when cutting deeper threads.
The 0.8 mm pitch is the standard pitch for an M5 thread to ISO standard. The die is suitable both for cutting new threads and for restoring damaged or corroded threads on existing parts — without having to replace the whole part.

The M5 x 0.8 mm die is used wherever external threads of this size need to be cut or restored by hand:
Before cutting an M5 thread, the rod should be ground or turned down to the nominal thread diameter, i.e. 5 mm. Too large a rod diameter places excessive load on the tool and risks damaging it; too small a diameter results in an incomplete thread profile and a weakened joint.
When cutting threads, the use of cutting oil or coolant is recommended — this reduces cutting resistance, extends edge life and improves thread surface quality. The die should be secured in a die stock fitted with clamping screws, which lock the tool in the correct position in line with the holes in the DIN 223 body.
After use, clean the tool of swarf and coolant residue, then store it in a dry place. HSS steel is resistant to wear but susceptible to corrosion — lightly oiling the edges is recommended for longer storage.
