HSS-TiN Metal Drill Bit 6.0 mm HEX YATO YT-44764

A high-speed steel (HSS) drill bit with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating and hexagonal shank, designed for drilling into various grades of steel. Split Point technology removes the need for centre punching, while the 135° point angle ensures efficient drilling in metal materials.

Diameter6.0 mm
MaterialHSS with TiN coating
Shank typeHEX (hexagonal)
Point angle135°

Features of the HSS-TiN metal drill bit

Titanium TiN coating

The TiN (titanium nitride) coating raises surface hardness to around 2400 HV, which translates into a service life three times longer than that of unpolished HSS. The gold colour of the coating makes the drill bit easy to identify, and the layer itself reduces friction during drilling, which in turn lowers heat build-up in the tool.

Hexagonal HEX shank

The hexagonal shank prevents the drill bit from slipping in the chuck, which matters when working with cordless drills and impact drivers. The HEX geometry transfers torque better than a round shank, particularly when drilling into hard materials.

Split Point technology

Split Point cutting edges form a self-centring drill tip, removing the need to centre punch the surface beforehand. This shortens working time and improves the accuracy of hole starting, especially on smooth and rounded metal surfaces.

135° point angle

A 135° point angle is the standard for drilling into steels of varying hardness. The larger angle, compared with the general-purpose 118°, reduces the axial thrust required for drilling and provides better heat dissipation from the cutting zone, which matters during prolonged work.

Applications of the HSS-TiN 6.0 mm drill bit

  • Drilling into structural steel up to 900 N/mm²
  • Working on stainless and acid-resistant steel
  • Drilling into cold-rolled steel
  • Work on steel sheet of various thicknesses
  • Assembly of steel and metal structures
  • Workshop and service work
  • Industrial installations requiring mounting holes
  • Repair and modification of steel components

Tool compatibility

The hexagonal HEX shank fits cordless screwdrivers, hammer drills with a HEX adapter and standard drill chucks. Before use, check that the tool's chuck allows the hexagonal shank to be held securely.

Using and maintaining the metal drill bit

When drilling into steel, use a rotational speed suited to the diameter of the drill bit – for a 6.0 mm bit in structural steel, the optimum speed is around 1500-2000 rpm. Using cooling and lubricating fluids extends the service life of the drill bit and improves the quality of the holes produced.

Keep the drill bit perpendicular to the workpiece surface, avoiding excessive pressure, which can cause overheating or break the cutting edge. After finishing work, it is worth cleaning swarf off the drill bit and protecting it from moisture, even though the TiN coating provides additional corrosion protection.

Re-sharpening an HSS-TiN drill bit

HSS drill bits can be re-sharpened repeatedly, but bear in mind that sharpening removes the TiN coating from the surface of the cutting edge. Once sharpened, the drill bit retains the properties of the base HSS steel but loses the benefits of the titanium coating. Sharpening should preserve the original 135° point angle and the symmetry of the cutting edges.
