A plumbing tool for the precise cutting of plastic pipes, fitted with an 8Cr13 stainless steel blade and a ratchet mechanism that reduces the force required to cut.
Chrome steel with a carbon content of 0.8% provides corrosion resistance and a long-lasting cutting edge. A hardness of HRC 54 offers a suitable balance between hardness and resistance to chipping when cutting harder materials.
The ratchet system spreads the cutting force over several stages, reducing the hand pressure required by around 40-50% compared with cutters without this mechanism. A useful solution when making repeated cuts throughout the day or when cutting pipes with a thicker wall.
The aluminium body provides rigidity while keeping the tool lightweight. Its resistance to mechanical deformation ensures square cuts even after prolonged use in workshop conditions.
The elastomer coating increases friction between the hand and the tool, giving a firmer grip when working in gloves or in damp conditions. It also reduces the transmission of vibration to the hand during cutting.

The cutter is designed for cutting thermoplastic pipes: PVC-U (unplasticised), PP (polypropylene), PE (polyethylene) and PU (polyurethane). It is not suitable for cutting thermosetting plastic pipes, glass-fibre reinforced pipes or multilayer pipes with an aluminium core.
Before you start cutting, make sure the pipe is clean and dry - contamination can blunt the blade more quickly. Cut at right angles to the axis of the pipe, placing it in the cutter jaws so that the marker indicates the intended cutting line.
The ratchet mechanism requires the handles to be squeezed fully in every cycle - interrupting the movement halfway through the stroke can result in an uneven cut. After finishing work, clean dust and swarf from the blade, and lubricate the ratchet pivot with PTFE grease every 6-12 months.
The blade stays sharp in daily use for 12-18 months, depending on the intensity of work. Blunting shows itself as the need to apply more pressure or as burrs forming on the cut edge. Most manufacturers offer replacement blades as service parts.
A value of HRC 54 denotes hardness measured by the Rockwell method using a conical diamond indenter. For comparison, kitchen knives have a hardness of 55-58 HRC and woodworking blades 58-62 HRC. A value of 54 HRC provides wear resistance while retaining the flexibility that prevents the blade from cracking.
