A spiral-flute drill bit with an SDS Max shank, designed for drilling 40 mm holes in concrete, granite, masonry and other stone materials. The twin-flute construction and tungsten carbide tip ensure efficient performance in demanding construction applications.
The SDS Max shank system is the standard for drills weighing over 5 kg. The shank diameter is 18 mm, which ensures a secure fit and reliable transmission of high torque. It requires a drill with an SDS Max chuck and is not compatible with SDS Plus (10 mm).
The two-flute design speeds up the removal of drill dust from the hole. In practice, this means shorter drilling times and a lower risk of the bit jamming in deep holes, particularly at a diameter of 40 mm.
The cutting tip made of tungsten carbide stays sharp when drilling hard materials. It extends the service life of the bit and allows repeated use without loss of performance, even in reinforced concrete or granite.
40 mm holes are standard for installing ventilation systems, heavy-gauge cables and M16–M20 chemical anchors. The 450 mm length allows drilling through walls up to 400 mm thick, with allowance for the fixing depth.

The bit requires a hammer drill or rotary hammer with an SDS Max chuck. Typical models are tools with a minimum power of 1200 W and a weight above 5 kg, such as the Bosch GBH 5-40 DCE, Makita HR4013C or DeWalt D25601K. It is not suitable for impact drivers or drills with an SDS Plus chuck.
Before starting work, check that the bit is correctly seated in the chuck – it should click audibly into place. When drilling reinforced concrete, water cooling is recommended for diameters above 30 mm, as it extends the life of the tungsten carbide tip.
After each use, clean the shank of dust and protect it with grease or maintenance oil. This prevents corrosion and makes fitting easier the next time the bit is used. The tungsten carbide tip can be sharpened periodically on a diamond disc, although for a 40 mm bit resharpening may not be economically worthwhile.
When drilling large-diameter holes there is a risk of the bit jamming, particularly when it hits rebar. Use the side handle of the drill and maintain a stable stance. Personal protective equipment is recommended: goggles, anti-vibration gloves and ear defenders.
