The YATO YT-80080 splitting axe is a tool designed for the efficient splitting of firewood. This model features a hardened 900 g head and a 450 mm nylon handle, compliant with the DIN 7287 standard.
The head is made from hardened and tempered steel with a hardness of 47-55 HRC, providing resistance to deformation during repeated impact. The hardening process increases the durability of the cutting edge, while tempering reduces the brittleness of the material, protecting it from cracking under heavy loads.
The blade geometry, compliant with the DIN 7287 standard, features a curved profile that minimises resistance when driven into the wood and makes it easier to separate the wood fibres. The design ensures optimum transfer of impact force to the workpiece, which translates into splitting efficiency.
The handle, made from reinforced nylon and covered with rubberised TPR (thermoplastic elastomer), improves grip and dampens vibration during use. The material is resistant to impact and changing weather conditions, which extends the tool's service life with regular use.
The steel wedge securing the head to the handle prevents the joint from opening up during intensive work. The metal wedge design eliminates the head coming loose, a problem typical of traditional wooden handles fitted with wooden wedges.

Combining a 900 g head with a 450 mm handle strikes a balance between impact force and tool control. This configuration works well when splitting wood up to 30 cm in diameter, allowing you to work for longer periods without excessive fatigue. The shorter handle makes manoeuvring easier in confined spaces, such as a woodshed.
The 47-55 HRC hardness range (Rockwell scale) means that the head steel has a structure providing both resistance to wear of the cutting edge and a degree of ductility that protects against cracking. Values below 47 HRC would result in rapid blunting of the blade, while above 55 HRC the risk of the material chipping when striking hard knots would increase.
The DIN 7287 standard specifies requirements for the geometry of splitting axes, including the cutting edge angle, the curved profile and the weight distribution. Compliance with this standard means that the tool has been designed according to proven principles of splitting mechanics, which translates into predictable efficiency and safe use.
Before starting work, check that the head is securely fixed to the handle and inspect the condition of the cutting edge. The blade should be free from dents and chips. After use, remove any resin residue and moisture, then apply a thin layer of protective oil to the steel parts.
The nylon handle with TPR coating does not require oiling, but it is worth checking periodically for cracks in the material. When working in low temperatures, nylon retains its strength properties better than wood, which can crack in frost.
A splitting axe should be sharpened less often than a general-purpose axe, because too sharp a cutting edge angle can cause the blade to become stuck in the wood. The recommended sharpening angle for splitting axes is 25-30 degrees.
