HSS 4241 step drill bit with TiN coating for drilling variable-diameter holes in steel sheet, non-ferrous metals, stainless steel and plastics. The stepped design eliminates the need to change tools when drilling holes of different sizes.
A material containing tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, delivering a hardness of 62-65 HRC. As a result, the bit keeps its cutting edges sharp even during prolonged work with metals up to 900 N/mm² in hardness. The alloy is resistant to temperatures of up to 600°C, which allows drilling without frequent interruptions.
A ceramic layer 2-3 micrometres thick increases surface hardness to 2400 HV and reduces the coefficient of friction by around 40%. In practice, this means less heat build-up in the bit, longer cutting-edge life and the ability to work at higher rotational speeds. The coating's characteristic gold colour makes tool wear easy to assess visually.
The tip geometry provides a stable starting point without the need for pre-drilling or a centre punch. This feature is particularly useful when drilling into curved surfaces, thin sheet metal and smooth materials, where conventional drill bits tend to slip.
The two-flute design with a 30° helix angle allows efficient chip removal from deep holes. This system prevents the flutes from clogging and reduces the risk of the bit jamming in the material. In addition, the spiral flutes act as cooling channels, drawing heat away from the drilling point.
| Model | YT-44744 |

| Drilling diameter range | 6-20 mm (in 2 mm steps) |
| Shank material | HSS 4241 high-speed steel |
| Surface coating | TiN (titanium nitride) |
| Shank type | Three-flat (hex) |
| Number of flutes | 2 (spiral) |
| Applications | Stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, steel sheet, plastics |
For stainless steel, recommended speeds: 400-600 rpm at a diameter of 6 mm, 200-350 rpm at a diameter of 20 mm. For aluminium and non-ferrous metals: 800-1200 rpm. Using a manual feed with moderate pressure prevents overheating and breakage of the cutting edges. When drilling materials over 2 mm thick, cooling with emulsion or cutting oil is recommended.
The three-flat shank fits impact drivers, cordless drills with keyless chucks and drills with three-jaw chucks from 10 mm. The three flat surfaces ensure a secure hold and full torque transfer without slipping, which matters when drilling into harder materials.
After use, remove chips from the flutes with a wire brush and clean any oil residue from the surface of the bit. Storing it in a dry place prevents corrosion of the TiN coating. Sharpening a step drill bit yourself is not recommended — sharpening requires specialist equipment that preserves the original cutting-edge geometry.
