How to check a cable's cross-section
A cable's cross-section in mm² is the cross-sectional area of the copper conductor. For single-core cables it can be read from the marking on the insulation (e.g. 1×0.75 mm²). If there is no marking, you can measure the conductor diameter with a micrometer and calculate the cross-section using the formula: S = π × (d/2)², where d is the diameter in millimetres.
Use and maintenance
Before starting work, set the stripper to the correct cross-section range by placing the cable in the corresponding hole in the jaws. The correct setting prevents damage to the copper conductors. To strip the insulation, squeeze the tool and rotate it around the cable, then pull it towards the end of the cable.
The cutting jaws need periodic cleaning to remove residues of PVC or rubber insulation. Dirt can affect cutting precision. With intensive use, the sharpness of the edges should be checked every 6 months. Store the tool in a dry place, protected from mechanical impacts.
The difference between a universal and an automatic wire stripper
A universal wire stripper requires the cross-section range to be set manually, which gives greater control over the process. Automatic strippers adjust themselves to the cable thickness, but they are more expensive and may have a limited diameter range.
