An HSS twist drill bit with a titanium nitride coating, designed for drilling in structural, stainless and high-grade steel. Manufactured to DIN 338, it delivers precise holes while maintaining a long tool life.
The TiN layer raises the surface hardness of the drill bit to approximately 2400 HV, reduces the coefficient of friction and increases wear resistance. This allows work at higher temperatures without loss of cutting edge sharpness, which extends tool life by as much as 300% compared with uncoated HSS drill bits.
The self-centring drill point removes the need to centre punch the material beforehand. The 135° design ensures a stable start to drilling, prevents the bit from slipping on the metal surface and reduces the axial load on the drill, which matters when working with harder grades of steel.
Compliance with the international DIN 338 standard guarantees that the diameter and the length of the working part are held to tolerance. The standard also defines the geometry of the flutes and the shape of the point, ensuring repeatable hole dimensions and compatibility with the chucking systems used on industrial drills.
The cylindrical shank fits standard drill chucks – both keyless and keyed. The shank diameter matches the drill diameter, ensuring concentric clamping and minimising radial runout during operation.

HSS (High Speed Steel) is a high-speed steel containing tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium and cobalt that retains its hardness and cutting ability at temperatures up to 600°C. The TiN (titanium nitride) coating applied by PVD forms a layer 2–4 micrometres thick that lowers the temperature in the cutting zone by approximately 20–30% and reduces the adhesion of swarf to the drill surface.
The characteristic gold colour of the TiN coating makes the drill bit easy to identify and allows visual assessment of tool wear – damage to the coating signals that the bit needs replacing or regrinding.
For a 10 mm drill bit in S235 steel, the recommended speed is 600–800 rpm at a feed of 0.15–0.25 mm/rev. For stainless steel, reduce the speed to 400–600 rpm and use cutting fluid. Dry drilling is acceptable in structural steel for holes shallower than 3× the drill diameter.
The drill bit works with impact and non-impact drills of at least 500 W, pillar drills and magnetic drills. The straight shank fits 1.5–13 mm keyless chucks and B16 keyed chucks.
Using the drill bit in rotary hammers with the hammer action engaged is not recommended – rotation only, with the hammer action switched off, is required to preserve the point geometry and avoid premature blunting of the cutting edges.
After use, remove swarf with compressed air and protect the drill bit with a thin film of machine oil. Storing it in a case or tube protects the edges from mechanical damage. The bit can be reground on a tool grinder, maintaining a 135° point angle and a symmetrical point.
