A professional kit for repairing damaged spark plug threads in petrol engines. Supplied with a tap, repair inserts in four lengths and installation tools, it allows a permanent repair without replacing the cylinder head.
The M16 tap prepares the hole in the cylinder head to take the repair insert. The 1.25 mm thread pitch ensures compatibility with standard spark plug holes in most petrol engines.
Inserts made from #20 carbon steel restore the original M14 thread once it has been damaged. The M14×1.25 mm internal thread matches standard spark plugs, so no non-standard parts are required.
Inserts measuring 10, 11, 13 and 19 mm can be matched to different spark plug hole depths in four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines and other designs. Choosing the right length ensures the spark plug is fully seated.
The tap is made from carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.45%, giving it sufficient hardness to cut threads in aluminium and cast iron cylinder heads while remaining resistant to breakage.

Before using the kit, check the spark plug thread in the engine. The M14×1.25 mm standard is found in most modern petrol engines, although some designs (for example older American engines) may use an M18 or M10 thread. Thread details are given in the vehicle's technical documentation or on the packaging of original spark plugs.
Repairing a damaged spark plug thread with the YT-17582 kit is carried out in several stages. First, remove the damaged spark plug and clean the hole of any debris. A new thread is then cut in the cylinder head with the M16×1.25 mm tap, enlarging the hole and removing the damaged sections. Once the hole has been cleaned of swarf, a repair insert of the appropriate length is fitted, restoring the original M14×1.25 mm thread.
The insert length required depends on the depth of the spark plug hole in a given engine. 10–11 mm inserts are used in the shallower holes typical of four-cylinder engines, while 13–19 mm inserts are used in the deeper holes of V6 and V8 engines. Once fitted, the insert forms a permanent joint with the cylinder head, restoring the full mechanical strength of the thread.
When cutting the thread with the tap, apply tapping lubricant or engine oil, which makes cutting easier and prevents the tool from burning. Turn the tap slowly, backing it off a quarter turn every half turn to break the swarf. After use, clean the tap and the other tools and protect them against corrosion.
Repair inserts are fitted with a special installation mandrel, which may be included in the kit or available separately. Once the insert has been fitted, the mandrel is unscrewed, leaving the insert permanently in the cylinder head. Before fitting the spark plug, check that the thread is clean and blow out any remaining swarf with compressed air.
