Hook-jaw cutters for cutting reinforcement mesh, steel rods and wire. A tool with a drop-forged CRV steel head hardened to 40 HRC, designed for working with reinforcement materials of varying hardness.
The special hook-shaped jaw prevents the material from slipping during cutting. This design is particularly useful when working with round rebar, where standard flat blades might lose contact with the material. The hook stabilises the position of the rod, allowing the cut to be positioned precisely.
The head is hot drop-forged from chrome-vanadium (CRV) steel and hardened to a hardness of 40 HRC. The forging process produces a uniform material structure free from internal stresses, which translates into resistance to cracking under impact loads. A hardness of 40 HRC is a compromise between wear resistance and flexibility, preventing chipping of the cutting edge.
The arms are made from structural steel tube, combining low weight with high rigidity. The tubular construction eliminates bending of the arms under load, which is crucial when cutting larger-diameter materials. The 800 mm length provides adequate leverage, reducing the force needed to cut through a rod.
The cutters handle rods up to 11 mm dia. at a material hardness of up to 19 HRC (low-carbon steel, typical of rebar mesh) and up to 9 mm dia. at a hardness of up to 40 HRC (hardened steel). The HRC hardness parameter defines the material's resistance to indentation – the higher the value, the harder the steel. Knowing the hardness of the material being cut helps avoid damaging the tool.

Steel hardness can be checked roughly with a file – if the file slides over the surface without catching, the hardness exceeds 40 HRC and the material requires cutters with higher specifications. Construction reinforcement mesh (class A-IIIN, B500SP) usually has a hardness of 15-25 HRC. Hardened rods, spring wire or tool components can reach 50-60 HRC and require specialist tools.
Before first use, check the condition of the blades – they should be free from factory dirt and lightly oiled. When cutting, place the material in the deepest part of the hook jaw, close to the pivot, where the cutting force is greatest. Avoid cutting at the tips of the blades, as this makes them blunt more quickly.
After finishing work, clean the cutters of metal residue and rust, and protect the blades with a thin layer of machine oil. Storing them in a dry place prevents corrosion. Regular lubrication of the hinge reduces friction and makes the tool easier to operate. If the blades become blunt, they can be resharpened with a diamond file – the sharpening angle should match the factory angle (usually 20-25°).
When cutting rebar, protect the work area from flying metal fragments. The use of work gloves and safety goggles is recommended. Do not exceed the maximum cutting diameter specified by the manufacturer – attempting to cut thicker material may damage the blades or break the arms.
